The Partnership Approach

Improving Barnsley´s health is everyone´s responsibility. A variety of organisations have come together to support the programme and to make sure things happen.

The whole idea of Fit for the Future is built on strong, effective partnership working.

Good health can only be achieved through partnerships, which work to increase education, training and employment opportunities, improve the environment and increase opportunities for people to socialise and live healthy lifestyles.

In addition there are an increasing number of community based groups and projects that are having a positive impact on health and well being.

The biggest contribution however will come from the people who live and work in Barnsley.

Our vision is that:
People are happy, healthy and resourceful. They live rewarding and fulfilling lives. They are well informed about their health. They take greater personal responsibility for their health throughout their life.
They are pro-active in looking after the health of their children.

The wider community - people, employers, retailers, and organisations - promotes and supports healthy life styles. Schools are effective in influencing young people about their health. Employers have regard to the health needs of their employees. Communities are empowered and resourced to tackle their problems and support people in need of help.

Introduction

Whilst generally improving, health in Barnsley is currently falling behind other parts of the country. Fit for the Future recognises that this affects people´s lives in many ways – it not only stops people enjoying life to the full but it can often limit their ability to earn a good wage for example.

Fit for the Future works with a wide range of partners including local community groups and the general public. By working together, everyone will be able to make a difference and improve people´s health in Barnsley.

There are six main areas that Fit for the Future focuses on. These include not only lifestyle factors such as smoking, nutrition, alcohol and physical activities but also looks at the bigger picture and includes children and young people, family support, helping disadvantaged communities, tackling the root causes of ill health, improving primary care services and increasing the contribution of the NHS to the local economy.
